Navigating the Cloud-Native Shift

:

Read this guest blog and interview recap to learn about valuable insights Glenn Chagnot shares about the intricacies of the transition to cloud-native architectures.

Transition to Cloud-Native Architectures

In the dynamic landscape of telecommunications, the transition to cloud-native architectures is reshaping the industry, ushering in new opportunities and challenges for service providers. I recently sat down with Glenn Chagnot, Senior Director of Product Management - Cloud at Spirent, to get his valuable insights into the intricacies of this transformative journey.

Chagnot highlighted that the move to 5G represents much more than achieving faster consumer experiences; it's the gateway to innovative business solutions that unlock revenue opportunities, like private 5G, IoT, AR, and VR. The challenge for service providers lies in navigating the complex technology changes and ensuring a seamless transition that satisfies customers, attracts new ones, and keeps investors content - at the same time.

Testing and Visibility in the Cloud-Native Era

As the conversation delved deeper, Chagnot emphasized the importance of testing and visibility in the cloud-native era. Traditional testing methods are no longer sufficient, and the shift requires a paradigm change—from vertical to horizontal technology. Cloud-native networks demand a new approach, where reliability is achieved by fast failure recovery, not failure avoidance, and scalability is achieved by scaling out, not up! Chagnot stressed the need for proactive testing and understanding how cloud issues can impact 5G services, especially in an environment where every day in the cloud is considered a "rainy day."

The discussion also touched upon the organizational challenges service providers face, with distinct teams for 5G, applications, and the cloud struggling to communicate effectively. To address these silo challenges, Chagnot unpacked Spirent's solutions like Landslide and CloudSure. Landslide enables performance and capacity testing for mobile networks, simulating real-world scenarios with millions of users. CloudSure, on the other hand, allows service providers to bring cloud impairments into pre-production environments, offering both a comprehensive and anticipatory understanding of the impact on 5G services.

The bottom line is that the journey to cloud-native infrastructure is a multifaceted one, demanding a holistic approach from service providers. With the right testing and visibility solutions, the industry can not only overcome challenges but also unlock the full potential of 5G and cloud-native technologies. As the telecommunications landscape continues to evolve, staying ahead with innovative solutions becomes paramount for retaining a competitive edge and delivering superior services to end-users.
